About the commissioner

MUDr. JOZEF MIKLOŠKO, PhD.

The new Commissioner for Children is MUDr. JOZEF MIKLOŠKO, PhD., a medical doctor, a professor in the field of social work, and a proud father and grandfather. He is married with four children and was a professional parent for two more children until recently. His whole life has been devoted to educational activities aimed at helping children from children’s homes. His work with children began during his studies at university, when he and his friends would come to see children at the children’s home in Bernolákovo each week. In 1992, Dr. Mikloško became the chairman of the Society of Friends of Children from Children’s Homes Smile as a Gift – Úsmev ako dar, which he led for 30 years until he was elected to become the Commissioner for Children. In 2012, he became the head of the Department of Prenatal and Perinatal Medicine, Psychology and Social Sciences at the St. Elizabeth University of Health and Social Work in Bratislava. Dr. Mikloško has worked as an external advisor to the Speaker of the Parliament in the field of children’s rights, and a member of the working group of the Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, for reform in the field of substitute care. He has received several awards for his work, including the award of the European Parliament for contribution in the social field.
